Day 84: Halloween decorations

Background:

Its Halloween. Once again for the 15th year in a row we have not put up any decorations at all. Why even keep this crap sitting around in a box in the garage?

The plan:

Sadly almost everything in this box has zero value. I will try to recycle what I can. I think I can dump some of this stuff on Goodwill.

Day 83: Kids electric car

Background:

The kids told me that they no longer want this giant power wheels electric kids car. It is constantly in the way in the garage. Easy win.

The plan:

Craigslist. Perfectly functional and it would be a catastrophic waste to throw it away.

Day 82: Paint

Background:

When cleaning the garage I keep coming across cans of paint. I need to find how to properly get rid of these, or even just use them up touching up the walls.

The plan:

Try to order less paint when doing projects so I am not stuck with a half gallon of paint. Storing it certainly does no good. Disposing of it is worse. I just can’t believe how much of it I have stored and tucked away everywhere in the garage.

Day 81: Live TV

Background:

In the past few years we were cable cutters. I was getting by fine using internet and a few streaming services. These days more and more I keep noticing that there are now too many choices for entertainment. Amazon for some odd reason now outranks Netflix on hours watched by me, but ironically the king these days of entertainment that my wife and I both enjoy: YouTube.

I would never have guessed that my wife and I would sit on the couch nearing the end of the day and happily binge watching someone’s channel on YouTube together.

Some positive perks: less (but some) advertising. You can many times skip the ad. The people doing the channel are typically laser focused on the topic and it isn’t mindless drivel.

Free.  You can’t beat free. Certainly there are transmission costs like internet and the cost of the Apple TV box we use, but when compared to the costs of monthly cable or satellite, you can’t beat free YouTube.

YouTube Red is pointless at this time. I see no reason to ever subscribe. There was one show I wanted to watch which was that Karate Kid spinoff Cobra Kai. I “borrowed” a copy from a friend and problem solved.

The plan:

I don’t ever seem to watch live television anymore. I honestly think I could do without except for the rare rare case where we wanted to watch something live, like election results for example.

Day 80: Frozen foods

Background:

I am trying my hardest to learn to cook more. I love that feeling when you sit down and enjoy a great meal together as a family. Its even better when you spent time making the food yourself.

The benefits of cooking your own food vs frozen meals is obvious. I find that the hardest part might actually be breakfast in this, since almost daily I enjoy a quick microwave burrito before work. I need to work on cooking my way to eating breakfasts at home vs a simple microwave job.

The key might actually lie in getting a good night’s rest and waking up earlier.

The plan:

I am going to plan to cook a good meal twice a week to help out. I think my wife still wants to cook once a week for dinners. We typically overcook and have leftovers all the time.
